Special Enrollment Requirements

This notice outlines your right to sign up for health coverage outside the standard open enrollment period, along with required health benefits for mastectomy-related care. It covers two main topics in clear language:

  • Special Enrollment Rules: If you decide not to sign up for health coverage right now because you have other insurance, you can still enroll later if certain major life events happen.

    • You lose your other health coverage or your employer stops helping pay for it (you must sign up within 30 days).

    • You gain a new family member through marriage, birth, adoption, or foster care placement (you must sign up within 30 days).

    • You lose Medicaid/CHIP coverage or become eligible for state payment assistance (you must sign up within 60 days).

    • If you miss these special sign-up deadlines, you will generally have to wait until the next annual open enrollment period to join.

  • Breast Cancer Care Rights (WHCRA): Under federal law, if you have a mastectomy, your health plan covers breast reconstruction surgery, surgery on the other breast to create a balanced look, breast prostheses, and treatment for physical complications like swelling (lymphedema). Standard plan copays and deductibles still apply.
